In Rocky II, why didn't Balboa defend himself against Appollo to his fullest?

He just seemed to get battered and only remained on his feet from sheer willpower, that's a little out there, no?|||Because Apollo was a professional heavyweight boxer, Rocky was an amateur club boxer. The film was trying to make a point of Rocky having a big heart.|||You obviously missed the point of the character. Rocky wasn't a very skilled boxer. His advantage was the ability to not quit even when he's taking a beating. He wears out his opponents this way. They expend their energy trying to knock him out. He actually gets motivated by the beating he's taking.

Rocky says it well in the last film "Rocky Balboa" when he says to his son (not going to get the quote right here) "it's not about how hard you can get hit, but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward"|||He was paid to take a dive.|||he won didnt he, what more do u want???
